A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's major government projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the head of state.
The official reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an accelerated rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked significant apprehensions over operational security.

Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party called for an urgent pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
